TOUCHED BY A SPECIAL EVENT

When I arrived at Uniontown High School the morning of May 21, I had no idea what to expect. But I have rarely had such a positive experience as a volunteer.

The Special Olympics has been around for years. Volunteers work with individuals who have intellectual disabilities, and coach them as they compete in sports events. As a military spouse, volunteer work has become a normal part of my life. I had heard about the Special Olympics in different states, but this was my first time volunteering for them.

When asked to be a timer for the swim meet, I hesitated. I was afraid that I might not be qualified. What I found was that the best qualification was wanting to help. Any doubts quickly disappeared, as the joy and excitement of the athletes pulled me in. Medals were awarded at the end, and the athletes' pride in their accomplishments brought tears to my eyes.

Saturday was a first for me. But if Special Olympics will have me back, it won't be the last.
